Free days to enjoy the "Pearl of the Atlantic" beauties.
Madeira rises out of the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of North Africa, in the gentle swell of the Gulf Stream. The island was discovered in the golden era of Portuguese Discoveries by João Goncalves Zarco in 1419 and, being entirely covered with vegetation, was named by him “the wooded island", 'Madeira' being the word for wood in Portuguese.
Blessed with a mild subtropical climate, the imposing volcanic peaks and deep incrusted valleys are covered with many varieties of blossoming plants and shrubs, including the famous “laurissilva”, a unique kind of forest classified as World Heritage by UNESCO.
Famous for its flowers, its liquorous wine and New Year fireworks (the best of the world), the coast also presents you with marvellous rocky landscapes.
Funchal, the island capital, lies on a beautiful bay. Terraces of white houses line the wide open slopes of the encircling hills whose summits, overlooking the town, are often shrouded in clouds.
