Background and Objectives
Rotavirus is the most common cause of severe diarrheal hospitalizations
and deaths among children worldwide. Vaccines recently licensed could
be introduced into the routine program of childhood immunizations within
1-3 years and could prevent this most common cause of severe morbidity
and mortality in children. The international community has therefore
recognized that the accelerated development and introduction of rotavirus
vaccines is a high priority.
The 7th International Rotavirus Symposium will bring together scientists,
clinicians, public health professionals, immunization leaders, vaccine
industry representatives, and members of the donor community to update
research and public health agendas related to rotavirus gastroenteritis
and to monitor the progress with rotavirus vaccine introduction and disease
prevention. This meeting will discuss latest research results, trials of
new vaccines, new vaccine approaches, and issues in vaccine finance and
introduction.
The target audience will be policy makers, national public health and
financial authorities, national immunization program managers, pediatric
and infectious disease societies, scientists, researchers, bilateral and
multilateral development and financial agencies, and other partners
involved in supporting immunization programs.
Venue
Lisbon, Portugal has been chosen as the venue to coincide with the12th
International Congress for Infectious Disease meeting of the International
Society for Infectious Diseases (ISID) that will take place June
15-18 2006 at the Lisbon Marriott Hotel. The concurring meetings are likely
to enhance the number of participants attending of the 7th International
Rotavirus Symposium and to facilitate the logistics for those that will participate.
Participants
Because of great enthusiasm and interest in international scientific,
clinical, and partner community as well as the manufacturers currently
involved in rotavirus vaccine development, we expect that the attendance
at the 7th symposium will have approximately 350-400 attendees.
